Corfe Hills Girls in Gloves Project receives Satellite Club Funding

Active Dorset are very pleased to announce a partnership with Wimborne Amateur Boxing Club (WABC) who received Satellite Club funding to deliver a Girls in Gloves Project at Corfe Hills School.

The Girls in Gloves Project targets girls aged 9 - 16 and aims to tackle the rise in mental health issues and inactivity for young females by providing a welcoming and relaxed environment for girls to exercise. The girls will learn the basic skills of boxing alongside key knowledge to aid their general physical and mental wellbeing. The sessions are delivered after school once a week by WABC head coach Dave Rimmer.

One participant who attends the session each week mentioned, "Dave is awesome, he has great energy and makes the sessions fun". Selecting the right person to deliver a Satellite Club is essential to a young persons sustained participation and Dave ensures this by building positive relationships with young people to help increase their confidence and competence within sport and physical activity.

James Day, Sports Development Officer for Active Dorset visited the session in October and commented "It was fantastic to see so many girls having so much fun exercising. I think that is credit to how Dave tailors the sessions to what the girls want to learn and it helps that there is a social culture of learning and exercising together". This is now the second non-contact Boxing specific Satellite Club Active Dorset have funded and both have been very well attended and offer many wider benefits than just the activity itself. For example, some of the girls who attend the session at Corfe Hills mentioned they loved being able to let anger out, that boxing was unique because not everyone does it and it is fun because you learn something different each week. Most of the girls were in agreeance that their activity levels have increased since the club started as normally they would just be at home on their phone or watching tv.
