How many classes need to complete the Survey?
In each sampled school, up to three classes in three different year groups will be asked to participate in the Survey. In the case of infant schools, both Year 1 and Year 2 will be sampled.
Can a school sample all pupils in a school rather than just the classes selected?
Yes. All pupils in a school can complete the Survey, but only for Years 1-11. The school should still complete the Survey with the randomly sampled classes using the URLs provided. The rest of the school would need to be 'opted in' and would need to use a different set of URLs.
How do we select which class in a year group completes the Survey?
Sport England has allocated every school with a selection grid number. This number corresponds with a page in the selection grid guidance document. This document can be found in the 'Downloads' section, and it fully explains how a school selects the correct class from a year group which has more than one class in it. Schools with only one class per year group simply use that class, ignoring the need for the selection grid.
What incentives are there for a school to complete the Survey?
All sampled schools are eligible for two types of incentive provided they meet certain criteria.
- A bespoke school report showing the attitudes/behaviours of their children an young people.
- Credits to exchange for activity and/or sports equipment.
Schools that opt-in to the Survey are not eligible for credit incentives, but they will always receive a bespoke school report.
Do teachers and parents complete a survey too?
Yes. One teacher completes the Survey for the school, and parents/carers of KS1 children answer the 'attitudinal questions' about their child's participation in physical activity in Year 1 or Year 2.
How do you take the survey, and how long does it take?
The pupil survey is completed online using a computer, laptop or I-pad during the school day. It takes 15-20 minutes to complete. Teachers and parents can complete the survey at their convenience, in or out of school.
